There have been a lot of concerns about the Xbox One’s Kinect since it was announced that every system comes with one and just how important it is for the console. Between the “always-on” fiasco and whatnot, some people have been concerned about how the Xbox One is going to be used marketing-wise. Is it going to take a look in my house and use my personal information for targeted marking purposes?
The simple answer is no. Microsoft’s Director of Product Planning came out and literally said, “Nobody is working on that.” He went on to explain that Microsoft’s R&D teams are more focused on things like facial recognition than they are targeted marketing information collection.
I think he’s wrong. Somebody, somewhere is working on that. If they weren’t before, they are now. The camera gets a free look into your house and everything you do! It’s the perfect marketing information collection machine.
Microsoft may not be looking into it now, and it may not do so when it first comes out, but after it’s ingrained in so many homes you can rest assured it will be put to marketing use against you.
Am I paranoid or do you agree?
