Instagram announced on Thursday that ads are finally coming to the social network. Facebook paid $1 billion in cash and stock for the site in April 2012 when the deal was announced, Many analysts wondered how Facebook would turn a profit on the acquisition. The answer is ads.
On Thursday, Instagram revealed that the monetization of the site will start slowly. There will be “a focus on delivering a small number of beautiful, high-quality photos and videos from a handful of brands that are already great members of the Instagram community.” If an Instagram user sees an ad they don’t like, the ad can be hidden and feedback sent explaining why the user didn’t like the ad.
