We knew that GTA V was going to be a hit. Duh! Now we have some numbers. Grand Theft Auto 5 sales topped $800m in the game’s first day of availability, according to Take-Two Interactive, setting a record for the series.

GTA5 was released on September 17 and is Take-Two’s fastest selling title of all time. They can thank a lot of pre-release hype and a bunch of retailers opening at midnight for gamers to get their hands on it as fast as possible. That number is only going to grow much larger.

Especially once GTA V arrives in Japan and Brazil. The current figures do not count preorders in those countries. This success does cost them however. Rockstar supposedly spent around $115m developing the game over the course of five years, while the marketing budget even exceeded that. The total is supposedly around $150m on promotion. So, yes they had better see stellar sales. I don’t think that will be a problem.
